The incident I reported happened nearly a generation ago and, for most
respondents, in another country on the other side of the Atlantic.
When it happened, I hoped it was a rare and abnormal response to the offer
of a raise. By the descriptions of what some respondents do in such
circumstances, I'm not so sure.
