Roxanne Lewis asked about trademark symbols, and where to put them.
My rule of thumb if that you only need to put the "TM" or "circle-R" on the
first use of the company or product name. All references following the
first one don't require the symbol. It was a trademark specialist lawyer
who first advised me of this, and I've had it verbally corrpborated by
other corporate lawyers.
I also include a note identifying the trademarks and their owners. BTW use
the trademark owners' literature as a guide for whether they've registered
a trademark or not. Often you'll find that other sources get it wrong.
Sometimes you'll find something more more exotic, like a service mark, or a
trademark licensed to a company for a particular product. A case in point
is the Apple Macintosh. I don't know its current status, but when I wrote
Mac documentation in the early days of that computer, the Macinosh name
actually belonged to the high-end stereo (sp. Mackintosh, I think) folks
but they had licenced its use to Apple for computer products. The trademark
citations were curiously worded!
