Subject:[Fwd: Apple & Macintosh trademarks] From:"Mark L. Levinson" <nosnivel -at- NETVISION -dot- NET -dot- IL> Date:Sat, 27 Apr 1996 12:24:34 +0300
Like the Certs girls, you're both right. According to my profs
at the Ronald Reagan School of Unattributed Lore, Apple cleared its
own name with the Beatles people, explaining that the computer
business is not the entertainment business. The Beatles people
got back in touch with them when the computer business began to
approach the entertainment business, but I don't know how the
issue was resolved.
Early Apple Macintosh literature notes that the Macintosh trademark
is licensed from another company. I think that later literature
claims it for Apple, so maybe they bought it. If I recall the
story correctly, originally many of the Apple people themselves
used the spelling Macintosh because they didn't bother to look
up the correct spelling; then Apple as a company gave that spelling
its official OK because it would be easier on the worldwide public
than McIntosh.
