MAYDAY is short for "Aid me (m'aide)" in French. It's used only when
you're boat is about to sink. PAN is the next most significant call
for help. PAN is used (for example) when you're hitting 50 foot waves
in a 10 foot boat - but you're still floating.

I think SOS is phased out, but PAN or PAN PAN was still being used in
the early 1990s (when a bunch of pleasure boats off Australia got caught
in an unexpected storm). I'm not sure about now....
