Hello technical writers,

I have a question sparked off by the debate on illustrations.

Are there any 'Rules of Thumbs' as to when to use a diagram/flow chart etc
to illustrate a particular point in a document.

I am nearing the end of my first year as a technical writer. I came into the
discipline from a background in public relations and graphic design, which
means I am more familiar with glossy short shelf-life productions which use
lots of photos.

My current position entails writing user manuals for software packages,
targeted at a diverse market with a large variation in computer skills.

Thanks in advance

Claire
