I have been working in an environment for the past three years where a good part of the
documents are done in Word, then I convert them to FrameMaker.
Since the original styles were created in Word (headquarters in Paris), I created identical
styles in FrameMaker, being careful to use the same para styles (including case) as the Word
template. I successfully move the documents to FrameMaker with little trouble. The text is
converted to the FM para tags. However, you must globally reapply the FM para tags. The main
difference is when I move a document formatted in A4 to the US Letter format. It requires some
attention to the pagination.
If the Word doc has Word graphics, they import as bit mapped images. This does not cause me a
problem, but I generally redraw the graphics using the FM tools.
It really isn't a big problem and I find the solution very workable. I have more problem editing
the documents for the non-standard English used by non-native English-speaking people.
