of Style for Technical Publications.*

Use only to describe a graphic representation of an object that a user can
select and open, such as a drive, disk, folder, document, or program.
Within programs, avoid using icon for dialog box options or options that appear
on ribbons, toolbars, toolboxes, or other areas of a window.
In general, use the most descriptive term available, such as button, box, check
box, tool, and so on. If an option has no visual properties except its graphic
nature, use symbol, as in "warning symbol."
I am sure this is not the final word, just one more definition to think about.
