except phone numbers aren't just 7 digits.

modern usa phone numbers are chunks of 3..
area code
prefix
number

overseas, there's different schemes to account for the various numbering
plans in use. you see numbers from there looking like 12 34 56 78

also there's a change on the horizon where, somehow, the various telephone
companies have to allow enough numbers to account for all the new uses for
selective calling there are today - fax lines, modem lines, cell radiophone,
pager, pbx, and home phone from any 1 of a number of supplies (all with their
own phone number blocks)...add to that TV/satcom controller and other such
fun.

that probably means overlaid area codes (where XXX and YYY area codes cover
the same area - neighbors live adjacent to each other with different area
codes.) and an extra digit added to the prefix to bring it up to 4 digits.

fun fun fun...
