I fully agree with Alexander's remarks and recommendations on GIF,
JPEG and TIF, which are all bitmaps. I further use CDR and WMF for
vectorised images with or without bitmaps, depending on the demand
for quality of curves, etc. CDR is better, but the files are
normally larger.

If you want to minimize your Word (etc.) files, it is important that
you don't import the bitmaps into your Word files, where they take up
the full uncompressed size in your Word file. Instead use "Link to
file" and then DISENGAGE "Save image in document" . It take a little
time to load the image each time you want to see a page, but the
document is very significantly reduced.
