That's interchange formats for you. FrameMaker MIF is even more profligate.
But these aren't the normal formats that documents are saved in; they're
the ASCII formats that are designed to be easy to write filters for.
(RTF is the Microsoft semi-equivalent, except that they're not clear
on the concept).

But at least with the interchange formats you aren't going to find
megabytes of data unaccounted for. Saving a bitmap as a series of
ASCII hex bytes is big, but it's big in an obvious, countable way.
How you can misplace 2.4 MB in a Word file is beyond me.
