STC Region 6 Presents Simple Solutions: The Technology Emerges
6th Annual STC Region 6 Technical Communication Conference
Ready in St. Louis! Join us at the 6th annual STC Region 6 Technical
Communication Conference, October 31 through November 2, 1996, at the Holiday
Inn-Westport in St. Louis, Missouri. ?Simple Solutions: The Technology
Emerges;? will focus on changing technological trends and methods. The
conference includes Pre-Conference Workshops on Thursday, Conference Sessions
on Friday, and Post-Conference Panel Sessions on Saturday, including the
Consulting and Independent Contracting PIC Conference.

Keynote by JoAnn Hackos--Publications Process-Maturity Model: Key Practices
for an Effective Organization
Dr. JoAnn Hackos is CEO of Comtech, an international design firm based in
Denver, Colorado and San Jose, California, which she founded in 1978. At
Comtech, Dr. Hackos manages a team of project managers, developers,
designers, writers, and graphic artists in conducting design and developmen
projects for companies worldwide. Information design projects include
performance support systems, user research, product and interface design,
documentation and training design and development, and usability assessment
Dr. Hackos is called upon by major corporations to consult on the design of
their information packages, including interface design and online
documentation, and the assessment of their customers? satisfaction with
products, processes, information, and training. Recent clients include IBM,
Federal Express, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, Glaxo Wellcome.

Pre-Conference Workshops (Thursday, October 31, 1996)
Publications Process Maturity Model (PPMM) (JoAnn Hackos)
The key practices introduced in this workshop will enable publications
managers to develop strategic plans and put processes in place to ensure
publications quality, and improve customer satisfaction. Learn what
characterizes an immature organization with publications processes gone awr
and how mature organizations differ by having a process model in place,
believing in planning, and managing their plans. Say goodbye to missed
deadlines, ignored schedules, and mismanaged projects.
Conversion of RTF-Based WinHelp Files to HTML (Charlene James-Tanny)
This tools-independent workshop will guide you in converting your Help file
to HTML with a minimum of problems. You will start with source document
analysis, templates, and styles. Modularizing, coding for midfile jumps, an
time-saving WordBasic macros follow. Have fun with graphics, sound, video,
and animation files. Find BlueSky, WexTech, and other extra help.

Growing Your Business (Karen Steele) Growing your business is a big step. I
this session, we'll discuss several different ways to grow your business an
how to decide which way best suits you. Should you hire employees or
subcontract for the additional depth of resource? And what constitutes growth
in your business? When does it pay to stay small? Also learn various
techniques for setting up and closing a sale.
Tricks of the Trade Panel -- Experienced professionals will discuss tricks of
the trade learned during their years of contracting and consulting. Topics
will range from marketing tips, to avoiding common mistakes, to pitfalls in
scheduling. The panel also will answer questions from attendees.
Student Workshop: Preparing to Survive in the Workplace (Jeanie C. Crain)
Students participate in a workshop to assist them as they prepare to apply
their technical writing education in the workplace. Jeanie C. Crain developed
the major and minor technical writing programs at Missouri Western State
College.

SESSION I
Overview of HTML Tools
Presentation/demonstration for developers who should know all available
tools, and pick and choose the best for the current project (even if that
means no tool at all). Now that HTML Help is here, which tool (or tools) ar
best for you? Get overviews of several HTML tools (Microsoft Front Page,
HotDogPro, HotMeTal, and Internet Assistant), plus a brief overview of
hand-coding HTML files.
Managing a Growing Web Site
Workshop with techniques for organizing and reorganizing web documents as the
archive grows beyond 1,000 documents; some attention to management tools.
Principles of Site Design: More than ?_Just Slap_it_on_theWeb?
Workshop dedicated to helping attendees learn and practice design principle
in constructing WWW sites as opposed to the information ?dumping? that
accrues on many sites.
Marketing Your Services
Panel discussion covers a broad range of strategies for creating a
professional image, networking services, and winning long-term clients.
SESSION II
Online Documentation
Good Windows Help design is essential if customers are to receive the
greatest benefit. This presentation discusses design issues for both
RTF-based and HTML help files, including resolution, navigation, foreground
and background screen design, graphics, and fonts and colors.
The Pl&CS Home Page: A 3M Intranet Engineering Information Web Site
This presentation and computer demonstration includes a discussion on the
management growth initiative, the philosophy behind the Web Site, how it fits
with ?the way we do business,? the tool set used in the construction of the
site, and an active demonstration of the site and web page content.
Visual Communication and the Technical Writer
Presentation that discusses what technical writers need to know about the
evolving impact of visual communication including tips & techniques.
Site-Specific Computer Documentation for Novice Users
This presentation describes how the task of creating documentation tailored
for novice users in specific workplaces was addressed. Because existing
documentation was too comprehensive and individual training too expensive,
companies requested that specialized materials be created for their
employees.

Using Digital Photography In Technical Documentation-PhotoShop and Adobe
Illustrator, Part 1
Need to incorporate photos into your electronic document? This session will
help you. In this computer demonstration for the novice to intermediate
audience, Cordell shows software and techniques to use and shares some of the
pitfalls he has encountered. This demonstration is the first of two sessions.
Usability Testing Online Documentation
This presentation on Usability Testing and the benefits this tool offers
technical communicators includes practical tips for utilizing usability
testing to improve online documentation. Includes a tour of Edward Jones
Usability Center during Session IV with explanations of the center's usage
specifically related to online documentation testing.
Effective Team Management, Part 1
Workshop that prepares you to assume leadership roles in the workplace and
volunteer organizations. Learn critical success factors of team leadership,
how to establish objectives and manage teams, and how to create and sustain
an effective team. Session includes numerous group exercises. This
demonstration is the first of two sessions.
Multilingual Graphic User Interface Design
Presentation to review special challenges and solutions for designing GUIs in
multiple languages including cultural and language issues and interface
operation.

create and sustain an effective team.

Presentation on the STC 1993 TechCom Panel and the research questions asked
What do professional technical communicators bring to an organization other
cannot? How do professional technical communicators and high-quality
information products contribute to an organization?s success? How can we
quantify this added value? Are professional technical communicators using
structured development processes and formal quality-assurance methods? Do
these methods result in more successful information products?
