I'm not a contractor for technical writing but I have been a free-lance
fiction writer.

The thing with flat rate is you have to know what you're getting into. If
you could've had a chance to scruitinize the previous manual you would've
seen everything that needed to be changed and would've had the opportunity
to quote a higher rate.
Oh well, live and learn--you know what to do next time.

And: I would absolutely spend the extra time making it right. What will
you do when someone asks you: "Can I see your latest work?" Geez, I
wouldn't want to hand over that just-touched-up-and-nothing-else manual.
When you're a contractor your work is your showcase. Make the investment of
time into the manual--and yourself--because it will pay off in the future.

Make the changes and sleep well. Having peace of mind and being
well-rested will be payment enough until you charge a bit more next time. ;)
