Arlen's Intranet definition is accurate, but the pop culture definition of an
Intranet is more specific. Most people are using the term to describe a web
server inside a corporate firewall. Essentially, a private web for internal
users.
The business reason for their overwhelming popularity these days is:
1. The client-server model allows people on Macs, UNIX boxes and PCs to share
data easily.
2. The web browser is a familiar, usable interface.
3. HTTP hyperlinking is a good navigation aid, especially when contrasted with
a simple file server or a complex entanglement of Lotus Notes databases.
