Good day,

My employer and I are facing localization issues for the first time. It's
fascinating and I am learning fast, but still feel out of my depth. I
appreciate any help you can offer. Please reply via email and I will
summarize to both lists.

Background:

- Our European distributor has translated/localized the software, but we
are responsible for the documentation.

- Right now we need to translate to German, but we will be faced with French,
Dutch, and Danish (at least) if all goes well.

- The first project is a WinHelp file, but we may be dealing with printed docs
later.

Questions:

1. Do you recommend hiring a freelance translator, or paying the extra money
for a translation service? In each case, why?

2. I have been warned that the localization process can be quite complicated,
especially the first time. My manager thinks it's not going to be very
difficult. What are your experiences?

3. If you have worked with translation services, which have you had good
experiences with? Which have you had bad experiences with?

4. If you have worked with a freelance translator, do you have recommendations
on how to choose one?

5. In working with a freelance translator, how do you handle quality control?

Thank you,

Sarah
