TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Chris Stone Wrote: What other writing, besides the actual documentation, are you asked to do?
Well, my team and I are responsible for any of the following:
technical writing (user guides, reference manuals, etc.)
hypertext writing and design (on-line help, web, etc.)
web design
graphical design
marketing design and writing
some internal training
template design
and anything else I've forgotten
We are (as yet) not responsible for:
specification documents
reports
presentations
We do these things because we can, not because they are included in our contracts or job descriptions (what's one of those then :-)) and, as a manager, I insist on my team broadening their skills whenever possible. As a small team, we cannot survive or be sufficiently productive through specialisation.
