I believe that is due to the parallel port. The Zip drive needs to have two
way communication on the port (bi-directional). Older machines (esp. 286s &
older 386s) only had one-way communication. This was, after all, before
'smart' printers (e.g., the HP 5) that talk to the computer to tell you when
the printer is out of paper, etc., on your computer screen, not just on the
LED/LCD display.

If you have an older computer, Zip drives may simply not work. We
were unable to install them on some IBM 386s.
