One alternate to that being the (periodic) issuing [issuance?] of a list giving
the current versions of all software [both programs and manuals, separately if
necessary].
Another being the one my current company uses -- identifying software and
versions by the date they are released in -- or the official name of the
financial year/quarter they are released in. Rather like the original idea
behind calling the latest version of a certain operating system Windows '95.
