TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
This probably will not happen for a number of reasons.
1. Unix system vendors (Sun, SCO, etc) will not pay
Microsoft for a proprietary help system. Microsoft's
HTML help will be dependent on microsofts help browser
for most of its interesting features (indexing, navigational
aids, etc). So unless microsoft is willing to give it away...
2. Unix system vendors already have help systems.
SCO (release 5) uses HTMl based help in a modified
mosaic browser. SUN/HP/others use CDE (common desktop
environment) help.
3. Netscape is also planning an html help viewer.
Unix vendors are much closer to netscape than microsoft.
Just try to get aversion of IE that runs on any unix
platform.
Myself, If they abandon what they are already doing,
I would bet most unix vendors will change to some form
of a Hot Java browser.
At present though see the vendor for the Help API.
