I know that many prople believe this to be an Urban legend, but while it is an
alarmist's view of what is going on and very dramaticized, there is a slight
amount of truth to this. On the other hand, be aware that the Internet Service
Providers (ISPs such as AOL, Netcom, UUnet, Pipeline, etc.) aren't standing
still on this and may have just as much pull in this area as the Incumbent
Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs, previously know as Region Bell Operating
Companies) and CLECs (Certified Local Exchange Carriers).
Unfortunately, working for a company (Bell Communications Research) with both
ISPs and CLECs/ILECs as customers, I really can't discuss my opinion in this
public forum on the details. I'll just leave it that both sides are simply
jockeying to be in the most favorable position.

I don't think this is fake as I saw a short notice of it in the papers. the
hearings start tomorrow so today or at least by tomorrow will be the best time
to protest.

I AM WRITING TO INFORM YOU OF A VERY IMPORTANT MATTER CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW BY
THE FCC. YOUR LOCAL TELEPHONE COMPANY HAS FILED A PROPOSAL WITH THE FCC TO
IMPOSE PER MINUTE CHARGES FOR YOUR INTERNET SERVICE. THEY CONTEND THAT YOUR
USAGE HAS OR WILL HINDER THE OPERATION OF THE TELEPHONE NETWORK. IT IS MY
BELIEF THAT INTERNET USAGE WILL DIMINISH IF USERS WERE REQUIRED TO PAY
ADDITIONAL PER MINUTE CHARGES. THE FCC HAS CREATED AN E-MAIL BOX FOR YOUR
COMMENTS; RESPONSES MUST BE RECEIVED BY FEB 13, 1997.
SEND YOUR COMMENTS TO: isp -at- fcc -dot- gov AND TELL THEM WHAT YOU THINK. EVERY PHONE
COMPANY IS IN ON THIS ONE, AND THEY ARE TRYING TO SNEAK IT IN JUST UNDER THE
WIRE FOR LITIGATION. LET EVERYONE YOU KNOW HEAR THIS ONE. GET THE E-MAIL
ADDRESS TO EVERYONE YOU CAN THINK OF AND FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO ALL YOUR
FRIENDS ON THE INTERNET SO ALL OUR VOICES MAY BE HEARD.
