In answer to Heather's question--

SME = Subject Matter Expert

i.e., the person who is your source for the information in the manual you are
writing. If you're writing a user manual for a software product, your SME is
probably the developer, although you might also find SME's in customer support
and training who can enlighten you about how users actually use the software
product.
