NEW PROGRAMS IN TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION
AT JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY, VA

The B.A., B.S., M.A., and M.S. degree programs in Technical
and Scientific Communication (TSC) at James Madison
University (JMU) are designed to prepare students for
writing, editing, or production careers in a range of
fields in technology and science--including computer
documentation, telecommunications, health care, medicine,
pharmaceuticals, law, engineering, proposal and grant
writing, graphic design, communications consulting,
publishing, and teaching.

The TSC programs offered through the Institute of Technical
and Scientific Communication allow students to establish a
blend of course work that matches their professional
interests. When designing their degree plans, TSC students
may select from a range of courses such as technical and
scientific editing, medical writing, legal writing,
proposal and grant writing, graphics and document design,
desktop publishing, electronic and online publishing,
computer software documentation, scientific rhetoric,
managerial and organizational communication, publications
management and production, and technical translation.

To obtain a broad-based education in communications
training, TSC students are encouraged to take courses in a
variety of disciplines as an important component of their
degree plans. Consequently, degree requirements of the TSC
programs are highly interdisciplinary. Students may
include in their degree plans course work offered through
eight collaborating programs, departments, or schools at
JMU in addition to courses offered by the TSC Institute:
School of Media Arts and Design, School of Speech
Communication, Department of Computer Science, Department
of Information and Decision Sciences, Department of
Management, Department of Mathematics, Department of
Philosophy and Religion, and Integrated Science and
Technology Program. Courses that are taught in these
disciplines and that provide students with a wealth of
interdisciplinary training include desktop publishing,
mediation, document design, rhetoric, HTML programming,
statistics, logic and argumentation, technology management,
and video graphics.

THE B. A. & B. S. PROGRAMS IN TSC

The TSC undergraduate degree programs provide students with
the research, analytical, and reasoning skills needed to
become leaders in technical and scientific communication.
Degree candidates must successfully complete a minimum of
39 undergraduate credit hours in required and elective
course work from the TSC Institute and collaborating
programs. The TSC Institute also encourages B. A. and B.
S. students to complete a 3-hour TSC internship in the last
semester of their degree plan. Students are also
encouraged to work with a departmental advisor to design a
program that best fits their unique educational needs and
career aspirations.

The cognate component of the B. S. degree requires that
students focus their course work on one or more fields
within an applied or a physical science. This focus allows
students to gain a deeper understanding of the
terminologies, theories, and processes involved in
technical or scientific disciplines. B. S. candidates must
work with their TSC advisors in designing the course of
their cognate studies.

THE M. A. & M. S. PROGRAMS IN TSC

The master?s programs consist of 42 hours of graduate
credit work in theory, writing, text design, and analysis
of communication systems and contexts. TSC M. A. and M. S.
students must complete at least two semesters of graduate
course work at James Madison University. In addition,
graduate students in both master?s programs are encouraged
to take extra course work in a given field to enhance their
skills or their understanding in that area of a
specialization.

The TSC M. A. focuses on writing and editing skills that
apply to a variety of technical or scientific areas. The
M. S. program is designed for individuals with established
training in technologies or science who wish to improve
their communication skills as writers, editors, production
managers, or information managers.
