Thanks for all the many thoughtful replies. The concensus seems to be
that, although OTF is accepted computer jargon, it's probably a bit
informal for documentation. I especially liked the alternatives
"dynamically" or "automatically," suggested by many techwhirlers.

I must confess, too, that "on the fly" brings up some squeamish-making
images to my mind too. Someone mentioned zipper anxiety. I always picture
some nighmarish biology experiment, in which a harried graduate student is
made to color-code house flies with different colors of florescent paint.
The one-dot pink group, the one-dot blue group. . .
