Can you do this with _any_ kind of technical information? If so, you
shouldn't have too many problems finding work; I'd think alsmost any
company with an entry-level tech writing position would be very glad to
take you on. You'd be able to quickly show your stuff and you'd be
able to quickly move up and out (to a better position more in keeping
with your other experience).

My (Kathryn's) response:
This does help, thank you. I have a couple of things in my portfolio, and I
plan to get more. If I can do this without any more formal education, I'd be
delighted...I just spent two years working on my MBA, and I'm sick of school.
I'm hoping good examples will make up for lack of formal education in tech
writing.

This may sound terribly arrogant, but I DO think I can absorb and restructure
information on almost any technical subject. For example, I have learned and
been able to explain (to greater or lesser degrees): corporate finance,
commercial lending, corporate strategy, industrial robotics, software tips
and tricks, woodworking, needlework, and lab techniques used in biochemistry.

I understand that I could probably get an entry level job tech writing for a
company, but at this point I need the flexibility in workload that
contract/freelance work provides. Do you have any suggestions for getting my
foot in the door that way? I'm not certain what area I'd like to work
in...perhaps developing marketing materials for industrial/manufacturing
companies, as I enjoy making the product look good almost as much as I enjoy
writing it.

Finally, a big THANK YOU to everyone who has written so far...I'm digesting
all the information you are giving me, figuring out what is really important,
and recombining it in a logical way. ;) And, yes I look forward to getting
even more.
