Until yesterday I would have said ATM fonts are not worth the hassle,
but then I ordered a set of them. For most applications there is
absolutely no difference between Truetype and ATM fonts, unless you're
dealing with typography in some professional capacity, of course.

There is, however, a problem, if you are using Acrobat Distiller in
Windows 95. If you generate a PDF file from a Postscript file, where the
original document contained Truetype fonts, the resulting PDF file will
not be searchable, because the Truetype fonts are stored as outlines
only. To create a PDF file with searchable text you need ATM fonts.

Now, I'm not sure, whether this is just a clever marketing ploy by
Adobe, to sell more ATM fonts, or whether there is some technical reason
why it really can't be done. The marketing ploy worked on us, we're
buying, but it hasn't done much for our customer satisfaction. I'd be
interested to hear what the situation is like for other platforms.
