Maybe the people without a degree are trying to make themselves feel good in
spite of not having a degree. Maybe the degreed people are trying to do the
same to justify all the time and money spend to earn that degree. It's all
relative (is that an absolute?).
I have a BA and an MA, and feel blessed to have been able to acquire them. I
don't look down on people who don't have degrees, as not everyone is given the
same opportunities in life. However, I don't appreciate when society sends the
message that formal education is not important; when society puts more value on
people being able to bounce a ball on a court than put PathFinder on Mars; when
one makes more money for punching people than for great medical discoveries;
when it's considered a greater accomplishment to be in the NHL than in the AMA,
etc. Every great empire/nation has fallen when it became so arrogant and so
wrapped-up in petty pursuits that it lost sight of the great benefits of
knowledge (and truth).
Is it important to have a degree? - Depends. It doesn't hurt. Lack of knowledge
and appreciation of knowledge hurts or worse...
