The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
According to Kat Nagel on 18 Jan 96 on this list, the quote "I'm sorry
this letter is so long. I didn't have time to write a shorter one" is not
attributable (?) to Mark Twain. The Blaise Pascal _Lettres
Provinciales (1657)_ is the earliest verified occurence in print
according to several sources.
Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, Abe Lincoln, O.W Holmes, and Winston Churchill
all *used* the phrase in letters or speeches. Holmes is the only one who
quoted it with proper attribution.
For the record -- again -- with thanks to Kat.
