I agree with Jim. Let's not forget the X-factor. Companies frequently
interview and hire people who may not be perfect "on paper" but
who demonstrate enough interesting qualities in the resume to
attract the employer's attention. A strong performance in the interview,
plus a personality and attitude that fit with the company's culture,
can elicit a job offer even though you don't necessarily match
some ideal criteria.

There have been at least 2 instances in my career where I was the
dark horse candidate, but got the job based on how the interviewers
felt about me after the interview, compared with the other candidates.
Where I have done most poorly was in situations where the hiring
criteria were strictly objective (government), with rigid quantitative measures
rather than qualitative ones.
