These recommendations are for yer basic Net Geek -- you'll need something
different if you're in another industry...<smile>

> o software

[Freeware/shareware] The latest web browser that works on your machine,
Adobe Acrobat Reader and PDFwriter metaprinter, an HTML Editor or two,
PaintShop(PC) or Graphic Converter (Mac)

['spensive] Frame, Word (if it works on your machine), and file-translators
such as MacLink, Dave and/or Claris XTND translators. Access (PC) or
FileMaker Pro (Mac/PC). A "Works" type suite (probably came with your
machine)

[Demos] the CDs that come with some of the books (to follow) that give you
a Java Developer's Kit, and something like Macromedia Director, Authorware,
and Shockwave

[You can probably get access to these at a Community College]

> o books

Bill Horton's _Designing and Writing Online Documentation_
Robert Horn's _Mapping Hypertext_
Every Laura Lemay book you can get yer hands on
Macromedia's _Inside Director/Authorware/Shockwave_ (updated every year, so
Best Buy or CompUSA
will sell you last year's edition for $5 in the Spring -- they come
with CDs and demo software).
All the Peter Drucker books you can find at the thrift shop for 50 cents each.
Guy Kawasaki's _The Macintosh Way_, _Hindsights_, and _How to Drive your
Competition Crazy_
