re sans vs. serif

I have met a few Tech Pubs Managers who insisted on sans serif fonts
throughout. My reply before conforming to the requirement is:

Please type "Jill is ill, but Bill will kill" in both font styles and
then decide which is more readable.

or compare a one to a lower case ell. or...

on and on

the argument for sans serif fonts is indefensible.
