TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
When I was job hunting earlier this year, I was looking for a salary in
the $30-35 range. The headhunter I was working with thought I was asking
too much but said they'd do what they could. I also had a friend who
said, basically, "Lots of luck. You'll be lucky to get $25K in today's
market."
I interviewed with a company who admitted that the salary they were
offering for the position was somewhat lower than that offered by other
companies--but I had no problem accepting the $37K salary! This was my
first "real" job as a tech writer (I had had a few freelance positions
as a grad student, charging $10-15/hr), the company philosophy/culture
fit with my needs, and I felt it was the perfect fit. Six months later,
I still think so.
