TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I think that when you look at the big picture, taking everyone into account,
averages are always low.
The average IQ, by definition, is only 100--but how many 100 IQ people do
you actually know? The average grade is supposed to be a C, but isn't that
considered "low?"
To determine your salary as a technical writer for a given area, do what I
did: ask an HR person at a large company (presumably a friend's company) for
their salary information. Being HR types, they're privy to all sorts of
demographic and statistical data regarding salaries. They have to have some
idea of what to offer too and they have publications, journals, and whatnot to
help guide them. You could use this yourself to get a more accurate idea of
your particular area, industry, etc.
