Matthew--
It's LaTex--commonly used in the engineering/science community
(Sunil Gokhale mentioned TEX earlier today--which is a predecessor
of LaTex). BTW, it's pronounced la-tek' ...
My engineering hubby swears by LaTex because it was a standard
in Mech/Aero E, and works great for incorporating complex graphics
and equations (esp. really big, "complex" ones!). however, he also likes
vi and emacs (text editors). I have spent many hours in computer labs
with him and the screens for LaTex make my eyes glaze!! it looks
like code to me--lots of %% and {)(! -at- *&#*^%RW$} mumbo-jumbo
(sorry, it probably makes lots of sense to folks who use its super
power and live in unix...). LaTex It produces absolutely beautiful,
clean
output and many engineering folks love the raw muscle it has plus
the complete control you can have over the final product.
I would do plenty more investigating before jumping on this one--
you might end up really liking the tool and being a valuable resource
for
this company and others (read: more business!) if you get good at
the conversions. OR you could hate it and have a project from hell.
sorry, i'm not a good resource on the indexing portion...
hope this helps a little!
