Word 6.0 (Windows 3.1) doesn't appear to allow importation of .gifs
or .jpegs.
Am I missing something?

You might need version 6.0.c, which is a free upgrade from 6.0. Or,
alternatively, you may have purchased your machine from Gateway 2000 with
Office pre-installed. I've yet to run into one of Gateway's factory
installations of Office which was done correctly (out of a working sample
of 50-75). They always have the PICT, and usually the GIF, EPS and TIFF
import filters screwed up. (The filters are in the "MSAPPS" directory;
"gifimp.flt," for example. If you can find someone else with the correct
filters, it's easy to find which of yours are corrupted; the bad ones are
almost exactly half the size of the good ones.)

I find them quickly, because whenever I pass someone a doc and they can't
read it, it's always the Mac's fault. They never believe me about the
filters until I show them how the correct ones work. Then it's still the
Mac's fault that the PC's filters are improperly installed. Go figure.

Have fun,
