And your suggestions about reviewing Covey's "Seven Habits..." are
good. However, bear in mind that one thing a mission statement is good
for is the opening line in the "elevator speech." (An elevator speech
is what you say in response to someone who gets on the elevator with you
at one floor and asks "What does your company do?" You have the
subsequent less-than-30-second period before the elevator stops at your
floor in which to answer this question - and you have to do it nicely,
because this person just may turn out to be a potential customer.)
An effective mission statement should be clear and concise, and getting
it there is why most people groan at the thought of creating one.
However, you can always look at the group effort as an exercise in human
dynamics - maybe write it up for your behavioral analysis Biz School
class project. Yeah, that's the ticket!
