I certainly can't disagree with you. Web pages that clog up the system
with too much crap, such as annoying banners, animations, frames, and so
on, can be a pain.

On the other hand, one of the things Technical Communicators seem to be
good at is using communications technology in a helpful, appropriate
manner.

From a communications point of view, some ideas are easier to explain
with an animation, and others can benefit from having a vector-zoom
capability. Vector drawings such as CorelDraw files (even WMF files) can
be copied into a Shockwave 'animation' so the reader can magnify the
image with almost no loss of image quality. (The Shockwave 'animation'
doesn't actually need to move: it can be a static page.)
