For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Last week I requested information about MS FrontPage, especially in reference to cross-browser compatibility. Thanks to everyone who responded. Here's a summary of the responses:
Most people who responded (one exception) found FrontPage easy to use and didn't experience too many compatibility problems. Kim Redick summed it up well when she said, "The only compatibility
problem was webmaster - specific -- too many nifty gadgets to use." Others mentioned that the new FrontPage 98 beta apparently fixed many of the current problems with translation of graphics and added some neat site management capabilities. Code in the new version is easier to tweak as well, but having a text editor handy wouldn't be a bad idea. Overall: it's a good all around tool, but works best in the hands of someone with a good HTML/web site management knowledge base.
Potential problems:
1. Translating GIF backgrounds from IE to Netscape...Netscape won't recognize background
2. Translating GIF's with large color palettes...Netscape drops a color
3. Some Onnet compatiblity problems
4. Webbots (optional) make creating forms and search indexes easier, but only work if the server supports FrontPage server functionality.
5. Recognizes Microsoft's HTML standard...will need extra testing to work with older browsers.
No one who responded had any experience with NetObjects Fusion, but Elna Tymes [etymes -at- lts -dot- com] suggested an alternative program, ExpressDoc. I'm sure she'd be happy to send anyone a list of its extensive capabilities upon request.
