I'll tackle the Word versions part.

There are (sometimes) separate numbering schemes for Word and the Office
Suite containing Word. Also of note is the file format and whether the
code is 16 or 32-bit. The following table summarizes these items for
Word for Windows.

Note that the file format for Word 6 and 7 is identical. That is not
true for any other versions.

Also macros are not directly compatible form one version to the next,
although there is always some sort of migration facility with varying
degrees of usefulness.
