I'd probably let this one go. It's a very common usage. The tech
writer/supervisor I'm doing my current project for insists on it also,
and while I consider it ugly, it makes writing easier in certain ways.
"Appears" has the unfortunate connotation of sounding magical, and
most other applicable verbs are intransitive.
