OPINION: Oh, I don't know, Buck. Isn't the whole concept of the
Introduction to introduce the reader to the book? The Introduction
usually provides a general outline of the following material. Seems to
defeat the purpose if it's labeled Chapter 1. I've seen it done both
ways, but I think it is "better" to start numbering at the first text
chapter.
FACT: Chicago identifies the Preface as the author's statement about the
book, awknowledgements, etc. and it should be numbered with the front
matter (usu. lower case roman numerals). The Introduction should
contain information relevant to the text (such as historical info) and
should be numbered with the text (usu. arabic numerals). I couldn't
find any specific reference to whether the Introduction should be
numbered as a chapter or not.
OPINION: I think *The Chicago Manual of Style* considers the
Introduction to be part of the text and should be numbered the same as
any other text. What do they know?!! <sticks nose in air
contemptuously>
