I thought I'd throw a log on the fire: we did *not* hire the guy who
interviewed with us and kept pressing about the entry-level thing. He
had no writing experience whatsoever (and no writing samples to offer),
and in the fast-paced world of software, we don't have time to teach
people how to write--and then how to write to fit our style and
standards.
Here's what we looked for while interviewing for our "entry-level"
position:
* writing experience (writing samples)
* aggressive in gathering information from SMEs (interview)
* not intimidated by the short doc cycles (interview)
* has an aptitude for learning (resume and interview)
It had nothing to do with degrees.
I think I can say, too, that these criteria worked, because the person
we hired is up to speed already (she's been here only a month),
producing quality, usable documentation.
