Can someone tell me whether Postscript files differ from platform to
platform? It was my understanding that are not platform-specific, but
the Doc. department I work for has had problems with Unix vs.
Windows-based .ps files.

On the Unix side we use Framemaker 5, and we create postscript by doing
a print-to-file. This file can be opened and printed using the Windows
version of ghostview.

On the Windows side, we use Word 7.0. To create a postscript file, we
set the printer to a Linotronic 100 printer, and do a print-to-file.
This creates a file.prn file, which we rename to file.ps. This file can
be opened and printed with the Windows ghostview, but the Unix people
can do nothing (for example, Unix ghostview cannot open the file).

There are a number of Postscript options that you can set by selecting
"Properties" for the Linotronic 100 printer, and then selecting the
Postscript tabbed page. For "output format" I tried "optimize for
portability - ADSC" as well as several other choices, to no avail. The
"data format" is set to ASCII, and the other settings are the defaults.

Thanks in advance to anyone with answers or sugestions.
