Some professional bodies (IEEE, APA, MLA, etc) publish their own "style
guides" which provide this kind of information. If your field doesn't
have one (and I certainly don't know of it if they do), your best bet is
to look at journals and books. They should provide adequate models,
provided you cover the main variations: monograph; edited collection;
contribution to edited collection; and journal article.
