The only comment I'd make on this is that IMHO you (and they) are
absolutely, positively and dangerously wrong. That's not a holy warrior
speaking, just common sense. Diversity succeeds more easily and surely
than
monomania. When you bet the farm on one choice, you're far more likely
to
lose.

I have to disagree. In today's complex networking environments,
software diversity most often results in increased costs for support and
maintenance. Some packages require more horsepower than others,
resulting in multiple hardware configurations and other costly
accommodations.

Speaking as someone who talks with network support people on a regular
basis, the nightmare of supporting a buncha different packages and
trying to get them all to work together is a huge motivator in demanding
standardized packages and configurations.

My hope is that the people who will be using the tool get a chance to
voice their opinion before the decision is made. That is probably the
only thing I would have done differently. Requiring everyone to agree
on a file format is a good first step, but IMHO, doesn't go far enough.
