If I understand the problem correctly, then the following method may work. I
use it in Word 6 to create macrons for characters in fonts that don't have
built-in macrons. Insert an equation field, and use the overstrike switch.
The field code will look something like this when you view the field codes.
{EQ \O(-,a)}
To raise the "macron" enough to sit above the character, rather than
crossing it out, select the "-" and use Format / Font / Character Spacing to
raise the character several points. In Word 6, Alt-F9 lets you switch
between viewing the field codes and viewing the field results.
