The various horror stories in this thread are making me grateful for my
main position in a small company.

I'm working at two sites: one a large company, where I've placed a
sub-contractor, and one a small company, where I spend most of my time.

At the large company, there's a running feud between the old guard and
the software development department Approval of the documentation and
whether we get the equipment we need depend on office politics. Even the
question of whether or not someone will give us the information we need
has become political.

And three weeks ago, at an international breakfast meeting, hosted by
the branch where we work, the president castigated the branch and axed
the budget for software development. Morale is lower than the Mariana
Trench, and people are taking it out on each other.

At the small company, there are about two levels in the hierarchy, and
the junior partner still codes and gets woken up at 2 AM to deal with
problems with the nightly run on client sites. When I need something, I
go directly to the person who can help and get a response in a day or
two. The people around me are witty and dedicated, and the politics are
limited to some griping that doesn't prevent the work from getting done.

Both places want to renew, and have offered full-time positions in May.
Guess which one I'm going to take?
