I think it's important not to ACT highly insulted.  I, too, hate these
situations.  But I have more success treating whoever as if they meant
it nicely, and by having a sense of humor.  Otherwise I feel like "Tina,
the brittle tech writer" in Dilbert.

I like the idea of getting them to take you to lunch!
