'Below' in the sense that has been so much discussed is NOT a preposition
or an adjective. It is an adverb, and the example cited in the original
question is perfectly correct.

From the Random House Webster's College Dictionary, 1991:

below, adv., 6th definition: at a later point on a page or in a text.
[Example sentence given is: "See the illustration below."]
