Seriously though, many of us can't afford to hire a writer who can't do
his/her own page layout. We'd just have to turn around and hire a
formatter too, and why hire two specialists when one good generalist
would suffice? (And there *are* folks out there with both good writing
*and* DTP skills.)

That said, I don't think anyone would argue with the fact that it is
usually far easier to turn a good writer into a competent DTP artist
than it is to turn a DTP whiz into a good writer. If I had a good writer
candidate that wasn't a whiz on FrameMaker but was willing to learn, I'd
probably give him a try.
