You've already gotten some great advice. I'll add just one more comment
about one of your concerns.

You stated that you're afraid your boss thinks you're a whiner because
you've tried to follow his initial instructions and only bother him when
you've got a problem.

This is fairly easy to solve--tell him you're doing this, and remind him of
that early conversation. You could do this as part of a "how am I doing"
talk.

The reason I advocate this is because I've had a somewhat similar
experience. My relationship with my manager was based on a conversation we
had just prior to my accepting the job. After two years of a puzzlingly
rocky relationship, I mentioned the conversation in passing, and he had
absolutely no recollection of our conversation. We were working at cross
purposes the entire time.
