Military experience the "kiss of death"?

I don't think so.

Military experience, even as a technical writer, is a good thing. If you
were involved in "military writing" it shows that you have (hopefully)
learned structure, compliance with standards, and you have technical writing
experience.

Besides, how would you "hide" two to six years of your life?

Does your misguided recruiter think that it would be better to tell
prospective employers that you "had to go away" for a few years, rather than
admit to serving your country?

Oh my goodness John, there are hundreds of headhunters in every town. Smile
at the miscreant and go elsewhere. If that recruiter thinks that military
experience can in any way hurt you, I can not imagine how he stays in
business or keeps his job.

Don't worry John, military experience will never hurt you.

Cheers!
